RFQ Checklist

horizontal vs vertical milling machine

The first document decision is spindle orientation. A horizontal vs vertical milling machine choice changes cutter approach, fixture design and which accessories belong on the quote. A vertical milling machine price is comparable only after those documents use the same envelope, accessory list and electrical supply. This checklist does not publish a market price or a savings percentage. Optional CNC conversions stay outside the comparison unless every bidder prices the same conversion.

Document comparison: Equipment scope

Write whether the job needs a vertical quill over a vise or a horizontal arbor for gang milling. If both orientations appear in the same RFQ, require two envelopes. List table travel, quill or spindle stroke, knee or saddle travel, spindle taper, workpiece mass and fixture height. Name which axes include power feeds or digital readout. Footprint during full travel and any PLC interface the plant already requires belong in the same packet.

Price exclusions

Vises, arbors, collets, coolant, power feeds, DRO, drawbars, installation, training and spare parts must be tagged included or extra. A lower vertical milling machine price is not a lower project cost if those items move to the buyer. Horizontal packages that add an arbor, overarm and different vises cannot be ranked against a vertical knee mill on the mill line-item alone. No discount figure is shown on this site.

Response basis

Each factory should state clearance under the spindle with the proposed tool, electrical supply for spindle and accessories, and the inspection method after a representative cut. Ask for the factory inspection record for ways, quill and leadscrews on a new machine, then agree site checks. FAT or SAT language should point to those documents and to the accessory inventory, not to a catalog photograph.

Still open until the buyer answers: quantity, destination, delivery window, three-phase supply, connected load, compressed air demand if used, and optional budget with currency and per-unit or whole-order basis plus supplier tier preference. Link the comparison back to inquiry options and the notes on fitting the mill to the workpiece.
